A Two-Chamber Reference Electrode ENES-3М is used to define efficiency of corrosion protection for underground metallic facilities. Polarized potential and potential of the controlled structure are measured from the electrode. Measurements require direct electrolytic contact of the device with the soil.

Device Description

Water tight electrode ENES-3М has two chambers – electrolytic with electrolyte and a copper rod and bentonite with a bentonite gel. The chambers are separated from each other with an ion-exchange membrane and a ceramic diaphragm. The second ceramic diaphragm is at the lower part of a bentonite chamber – it provides the contact with the soil. Electrode body is located in a cloth bag with a filler. The filler contributes into moisture accumulation in the operating zone of the electrode, this preserves the device conductivity in dry climate. A potential sensor is imbeded in the lower part of the electrode. Loose ends of the cable from the rod, potential sensor and braided screen have cable shoes of different shapes. The electrodes can work at 100% humidity and at -40°C – +45°C both as a self-contained device and with cathodic protection stations. ENES-3М has small contacting area with the soil, while the electrolyte volume is three times larger than the volume for the electrodes ENES-1. The electrodes are vertically mounted in the ground at 10 cm from an object, and the conductors are led to a test station or cover. A voltage meter with 20 kОm/v resistance and 3-0-3 scale is used to measure the potential difference between a pipeline and the electrode. A polaized potential is measured with a potential measurement device.
